The Creighton University Parking Lot – 19th and Cuming Street project redeveloped an un-derutilized urban setting property to produce a safe and orderly parking lot for the Creighton University students. The new lot helps replace on-campus parking currently eliminated by ongoing construction of the nearby undergraduate residence hall.
The project site with visible constraints bounded by public streets and parking trays on all four sides, an existing private building to remain active during and after construction, public utility infrastructure within the abandoned alley through the property, along with unforeseen buried infrastructure left by previous property owners – provided the design and construction team with various problem solving opportunities to successfully develop the site and maximize land use to fulfill parking stalls counts required for the Creighton University campus. The site utilizes heavily landscaped street tree planters, buffer yards, and interior landscape islands to soften the incidental hardscape of the parking lot. This landscaping, in conjunction with the tree planters and alternating concrete and brick paver sidewalk ultimately compliments Cuming Street, providing Omaha residents and visitors of the area with a beautified street corridor common of the downtown Omaha business district.
Ehrhart Griffin & Associates was awarded the American Council of Engineering Companies 2022 Engineering Excellence Award for their submittal of the Creighton University Parking Lot 19th and Cuming Street project under the Small Firms Project category.
